About the institute
Established in the year 1849 under the aegis of John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune, this institute was erected when he arrived in India in the year 1848 as the Law Member of the Governor General’s Council. With a mission to helping every lady by transforming her into a complete woman, this academy has laid great emphasis on the historical and cultural heritage of India, nurturing such values that can inculcate a sense of patriotism among the students and bring them up as conscious and self-reliant citizens of the country. It is therefore the aim of the institute to make higher education an effective tool for liberation of women and help them participate in the socio-economic transformation of the country.
Facilities at Bethune College
The college facilitates each of its students with a number of amenities within the premises of this institution. This is the first institution to have provided four different types of libraries for its students so they can easily gain knowledge entering into the desired department. These types include a general library that is massive in size, an arts library, a library for science education and finally a seminar library, each of which cater to specific needs of students. Further, the college boasts of having a computer centre that possesses high internet speed and easy access in each of its computers. There is a special hall room for carrying out all the NSS activities of the college so space is not a constraint for any pupil. So much so that there are career counseling cells, psychological counseling departments that resolve to helping the student women in remaining mentally stable and fit and a special medical centre that can be addressed to as a mini hospital within the premises of the institute.

Under the degree level, Bethune College has sixteen undergraduate departments combining both Arts and Science streams. Under the post graduation level, the number of choices a students can avail of are large in number. The academic portfolio of this institute can be categorized under arts and science and subjects like physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, computer science, statistics, mathematics, economics and psychology encompass the different options under the science streams.
