It was founded by Sri Mangturam Jaipuria in memory of his father Seth Anandram at 10, Raja Nabakrishna Street. It is located in Shovabazar Rajbari that once belonged to the families of Maharaja Naba Krishna Deb. This College is affiliated to the Calcutta University.

The college has three batches in a day, namely %u2013 Girls’ Section (Morning), Co-ed. Section (Afternoon) and Boys’ Section (Evening). It has around 6000 students, 180 teaching and about 100 non teaching members.
It is known to secure brilliant results in University Examinations. The College is recognized for its Sports persons at national and international levels. It also undertakes N.C.C. training. To create a sense of community bonding among the students, the college has also started an NSS unit since 2010.
The Facilities available at College include a well-stocked Central Library, College Magazine & Newsletter, Activity Clubs, Athletics, Extension Activities and College Hostels. Lady Jane Dundas Hostel and Students’ Residence (accommodations that is meant only for Girls), Duff Hostel, Wann Hostel and Ogilvie Hostel.
